The everlasting light

“Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.”

These are words in the well-known Christmas hymn “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

I have been thinking a lot about these sentences this season. Though this refers to Jesus’ birth long ago, it applies to present day. There is a lot of darkness in the world.

We need the light – to make our way, to see the positive, to live with hope.

Light takes away darkness. It’s nearly impossible to see in the dark until we flip on our smartphone’s flashlight app or grab a real flashlight.

The light is an instant mood-booster, too. Take cloudy days. When the sun finally comes out, I feel like a new person.

We need light; I need the light and every day, not just on Christmas.

Jesus, the light of the world, came into our life on Christmas. And he still is with us, lighting the way in a dark world and giving us hope and purpose. We just have to let Him in.
